Copying code from Stack Overflow got me flagged on an assignment

Back in my first month, I would paste chunks of code from Stack Overflow and just tweak variable names. It worked fine for small projects, but my professor ran some similarity checker and called me out on it. Now I type everything out by hand, even if I'm copying the logic, and I add comments in my own words to explain what each part does. Has anyone else hit this wall with academic honesty tools or is it just my school that's strict?
