Vent: our tool crib went from paper checkout slips to a scan gun and nobody can find a 1/2 inch end mill anymore
Six weeks ago we had a clipboard at the window and I could tell you who grabbed the last 3/8 collet just by the handwriting, but now the scan system logs everything and somehow the crib is emptier than ever, so has anyone else's shop made tracking tools easier and actually finding them harder?
The scan gun at our place was supposed to fix this exact mess and it only made it worse. Half the guys forget to scan stuff out so the computer says we have twelve 1/2 end mills when the drawer is empty. Then you go looking and there's nothing there but dust and a broken tap somebody hid. Meanwhile the old clipboard never lied because if you wanted a tool you had to write your name down or the crib guy would hunt you down. Now everyone just waves the gun around, beeps it, and walks off like that did something. My favorite part is when the system goes down and we all stand there like idiots who forgot how to use a pen. Makes me feel real smart, let me tell you.
