Talked to a retired machinist at the diner yesterday about tool offsets

He told me he never trusted automatic tool setters after one messed up a $400 part back in '89. Said he always did a quick manual touch-off even on new machines. Made me wonder how many of us rely too much on the tech and skip the basics.

Man that story about the $400 part in '89 hit home. My old shop had a Haas with an automatic tool setter that was supposed to be spot on. One morning it read a tool offset wrong by like a quarter millimeter and we ended up with a batch of brackets that were all scrap. Boss was furious. After that I always did a quick manual touch-off with a feeler gauge before running production. Just a habit that saved my butt more than once.

Did you ever figure out what went wrong with that tool setter?
