Realized my G54 offset drift was actually a dirty scale reader after 3 months of guessing

Was fighting random part sizes on a late shift and finally pulled the cover off. Had a layer of coolant gunk built up on the glass scale that was throwing everything off by a few thou. Anyone else found weird stuff in their scale covers?

Found a dead mouse in one once. Little guy crawled in through a gap in the bellows and got himself trapped. His... remains were basically dust by the time I found it. Took forever to clean off the scale and the reader head. Had to re-hone the whole machine after that.

Used to think mice were too smart to get stuck in something like that. Figured they'd find a way out before things got bad. Then found one wedged up behind a wall panel on a job site, same deal - dried out pretty bad. Had to dig the whole thing out with a screwdriver and a shop vac. Changed my mind about how far they'll push their luck getting into tight spots.
