Overtime shift at the old plant taught me a new way to check tool wear

Stayed late last Thursday to finish a rush job on our 2009 Haas and the night guy, Mike, showed me something. He runs his fingernail across the insert edge before pulling the tool, says you can feel the micro chipping way before you see it in the part finish. I'd always just waited for the surface to look rough or the machine to start screaming. Tried it on a worn end mill and sure enough, the edge felt like a tiny saw blade. Has anyone else used the fingernail trick or is that just a Mike thing?
