My lead hand swore I should rough at 800 SFM on aluminum, and the finish proved him wrong
Last Tuesday I was running a batch of 6061 brackets on the Haas and my lead hand Dale walked by and told me to bump my roughing speed up to 800 SFM because that is what he always ran at his last shop. I tried it on 12 parts and the tool life went to garbage, I was changing inserts every 4 parts instead of getting a full 30 part run. Went back to 500 SFM with a .008 chip load and the inserts held up through the whole batch and the finish looked way better too. Dale just shrugged and said the old place must have had better coolant. What speeds are you all running on 6061 with carbide, because I am starting to think his number came from a guy who only cut brass.
