Had a machinist retire last month and he showed me his hand-scraped straight edge

Old guy named Frank who ran the manual lathe next to my Haas for 8 years finally hung it up. Before he left he pulled out this Biax scraper and a straight edge he'd been hand scraping for 15 years. Told me he'd never seen a CNC machine hold a surface that flat. I asked him how he knew it was good and he just said "blue it up and check the spots." That's been sitting with me ever since. Any of you older guys still hand scrape ways or is it all ground now?

That straight edge is a work of art in its own right. You can't just buy that kind of patience anymore. Frank probably had a master straight edge he'd scrape against, or he'd scrape three plates together in a set to get them flat. That old school give and take is something you just don't see in a CNC shop. It's a dying art for sure.

15 years on one straight edge, did he ever say what he scraped it against to check it?
