TIL that the weird clouds over San Diego last Tuesday were lenticular, after I spent 6 hours thinking my camera was broken
Last Tuesday I saw these smooth stacked disc clouds over the hills near El Cajon and I took about 200 shots trying to get them to look right. I messed with every setting on my old Canon, thinking the lens was soft or the autofocus was off, and I even drove to a second spot to try again. I finally posted one blurry pic in a weather forum and a guy told me they were lenticular clouds, which form when air gets pushed up over mountains and creates those wavy layers. I felt kind of dumb since I had been blaming my gear for half the afternoon when the clouds themselves just look like that, all hazy and stacked at the edges. Now I actually want to catch more of them, so if you have shot lenticulars before, what time of day works best for you?

Honestly the hazy look is just what they are, so I would not blame the lens at all. Late afternoon has worked best for me since the low sun hits the edges and makes the layers pop.
