TIL I was shooting cirrus clouds wrong for 3 years, a storm taught me

I always aimed for the thin wispy streaks up high, but last Tuesday a big thunderhead rolled in and I finally saw how the cirrus were just the top layer of a whole system, so now I shoot wide and wait, anyone else realize they've been framing one part of the sky the whole time?

Back in 2019 I spent a whole afternoon chasing these tiny feather clouds with my telephoto lens, thinking I was capturing something rare. Turns out I was just taking closeups of the sky's ceiling while the real show was happening 10,000 feet below. That storm probably taught me more in 20 minutes than my last 3 years of YouTube tutorials, and now I half expect the clouds to call me out for being so dense.
