Three days of lenticular clouds over Albuquerque made me skip lunch to keep watching
Last March I spotted a stack of five lens-shaped layers hanging over the Sandias from my back porch, and each one rotated slowly like a spinning plate, so I grabbed my binoculars and tracked them from 11am to 2pm until they dissolved, has anyone else caught a cloud that moved in such a weird pattern?

I mean, that sounds more like a lenticularis that's just sitting there than one actually rotating. Those clouds form when air gets pushed up over the mountains and creates a standing wave, so they stay put while the wind blows right through them. It can totally look like spinning if the edges are curling and the light keeps shifting, and I've watched the same thing over the Sandias for an hour thinking it was turning. But if you marked a spot on it and came back ten minutes later, it'd be in the same place. The cloud isn't moving, the air inside it is. Easy to get fooled when you're staring through binoculars and the layers are sliding past each other.
