Pro tip: a guy at the gas station in Abilene pointed at the sky and called that flat gray layer a 'mackerel sky,' and I had to look it up
I was filling up my truck last Tuesday and this older guy next to me just nods up at the clouds and goes 'mackerel sky, rain in a day or so.' I had no clue what he meant so I pulled out my phone right there at the pump. Turns out it's those little rippled rows that look like fish scales, and they really do show up ahead of a front moving in. Two days later we got half an inch here, so he wasn't just talking. Now I catch myself checking for that pattern every morning before I head out. Anyone else learn a cloud name from a total stranger like that?
