My camera died on the one morning the sky decided to show off

I got up at 5am on Saturday to drive out to a field near Lawrence, Kansas for this shelf cloud setup the radar was hinting at. Charged the camera overnight, packed the bag, even wiped the lens like a nerd. Got there, framed the shot, and the shutter just wouldn't fire. Dead. The battery showed full at home and then nothing once I had boots in the mud. Turns out the cold plus an old cell did it in, or maybe the contacts got junk on them. So I stood there in a hayfield watching the most stacked mammatus shelf roll right over me for like 20 minutes with nothing but my eyeballs. My phone shots look like gray soup with a watermark. Now I'm checking batteries every single time and ordering a spare. How do you all keep your gear alive in cold or damp mornings?
