I finally got a decent shot of a roll cloud after my friend said my old ones looked like a blurry blanket.
He told me to stop using my phone's auto mode and lock the focus on the horizon. Took this one yesterday over the lake and you can actually see the layers. Anyone know a good way to judge how fast a shelf cloud is moving?

Guess you can't judge a cloud by its blurry blanket cover.

Totally get what you mean about the blurry blanket cover. I've been burned before thinking a cloudy day meant no sun, and then I got fried. My rule now is to always check the actual weather radar, not just look up. Those thick clouds can break up fast, or they might be thin enough to let a ton of UV through. Slapping on sunscreen is a non-negotiable first step for me, even if the sky looks completely gray. It saves you from a nasty surprise burn later.

Used to skip sunscreen on cloudy days until I got burned too.
