Ditched my phone camera for a proper tripod and the cloud shots got way better

For years I just held my phone up and snapped whatever weird cloud I saw, usually getting a blurry mess. Then last summer I picked up a $40 tripod at a thrift store in Denver and started using a 10-second timer. Now I can actually catch those wild mammatus formations without my hands shaking. Anyone else notice a huge difference just from stabilizing the shot?

Does a cheap tripod really make that much difference over just leaning against a wall or car?
