The day I realized my "efficient" drive to work wasted 3 gallons a week

For about 2 years I took the freeway to work because it was 12 minutes faster than the back roads. Then last month my coworker mentioned she gets 38 mpg on the same commute using the surface streets. I scoffed, but checked my own numbers. My car was getting 22 mpg on my route because of all the stop and go. Switched for a week, same total time when you count traffic variability, but used a third less gas. That's about 40 bucks a month in fuel, plus way less brake wear. Anyone else stuck on the fast route without checking the actual cost per mile?
