The carbon offset math I kept seeing on product labels just doesn't add up

I was at Target last week and picked up a bag of coffee that claimed it was 'carbon neutral' with a little tree logo on it. Then I looked up their offset program and found out they're paying for tree planting in Brazil that won't even mature for 30 years, while the coffee was shipped from Colombia on a container ship. That just doesn't match up with what I thought offsets were supposed to do... you know, actually cancel out your emissions right now. The company says it's verified by some third party but the math feels like a feel good sticker to me. My buddy argues that any action is better than none and that offsets fund projects that wouldn't happen otherwise. But I can't shake the feeling that we're just paying for a promise instead of cutting real pollution. Has anyone else looked into these labels and felt like something's off?

Yeah honestly that whole thing drives me crazy. My sister bought a "carbon neutral" mattress last year and we actually dug into the paperwork they provided. Turns out they were buying credits from a methane capture project at a pig farm in Iowa but like... the mattress was made in China and shipped across the ocean. The timing is all wrong. Tree planting is nice but it's not gonna help the emissions from the container ship right now. My sister was all proud of her purchase and I didn't want to ruin it for her but the math just doesn't hold up. She still sleeps on it though so I guess the feel good sticker works on some level.

Tbh I used to be all in on the carbon credit stuff, thought it was a solid fix, but hearing how the timing and shipping totally messes up the whole point, yeah that changed my mind completely.
