Spent $600 on a smart thermostat last year and my energy bill barely budged

I got a Nest Learning Thermostat back in March because everyone said it would cut my heating and cooling costs by a ton. The thing was $600 installed, and I was all excited about the auto scheduling and remote control from my phone. But after a full year, I only saved like $40 total compared to the previous year. Turns out my house is just drafty with old windows, and no smart gadget can fix that. I should have spent that money on weather stripping and caulk instead. Has anyone else thrown cash at a high tech solution for climate action only to find the basics matter more?

My buddy dropped $500 on a smart sprinkler system but still had a dead lawn because he never checked his soil.
