Spent 5 weekends trying to get my town's compost program off the ground and it still isn't running
Back in March I put together a plan to start a drop-off compost site behind the community garden on Oak Street, and I figured it would take maybe 3 weeks to get going. It took 5 weekends just to find out the city won't let us put bins on that lot without a $600 permit and a business license. So now I'm looking at a church parking lot on 9th instead, but I need someone who actually knows the rules on food scraps. Has anyone here gotten a small neighborhood compost site approved, and what did the city make you do?
Yep been there, and the church lot route is way smarter cause they usually already have the right zoning for "accessory use" which cuts a ton of red tape. The big thing cities care about with food scraps is rodents and smell, so you'll need bins with locking lids, a set turning schedule, and a signed letter from the church saying they allow it on their property. Call your city's solid waste department directly instead of planning, they'll tell you the actual rules way faster than the permit office will lol.
