Pro tip: Check your local permitting office before installing solar panels
I spent 6 weeks planning my rooftop solar setup for my house in Austin, got the panels mounted, and then found out my HOA requires a separate approval process that takes 4-8 weeks. Nobody told me about the extra layer of paperwork until I was already halfway done. The city permit took 2 days, but the HOA review dragged on for 6 weeks because they only meet once a month. Now I'm sitting with panels on my roof that I can't legally turn on yet. Has anyone else run into this kind of lag between city and HOA rules?

I mean, the HOA is kind of looking out for you though, right? They have those rules so the neighborhood doesn't look like a random junkyard of panels and wiring (which, let's be real, some people would definitely do). Maybe the real lesson here is just checking both boxes before you start drilling holes in your roof.

Oh, so we're supposed to be grateful they saved us from a "junkyard"? Like the HOA president's lawn full of plastic flamingos is somehow high art? Sorry, but I've seen what my HOA board considers "aesthetically pleasing" and it's basically just beige everything with a strict ban on fun. The real lesson here is that they'll approve a panel setup if you pay them a $50 "application fee" and wait 3 months, while you're out there in the summer heat with no AC. "Looking out for you" just means looking out for their power trip.
