My rain barrel overflowed during a storm last week and flooded half my garden path

I set up a 50 gallon rain barrel off my downspout back in April to save on water bills. Last Tuesday we got a heavy downpour and I forgot to check the spigot was open. Water backed up and poured out the overflow right onto my gravel path, washing it all into the flower bed. Took me three hours to rake it back. Has anyone else had trouble with rain barrels overflowing or finding a good way to manage the excess water?

Stella's got the right idea - maybe run a 10-foot hose from the overflow to a dry well dug a few feet away.

Oh man, that sucks! Maybe adding a second overflow hose that runs further into the yard or a dry well could help spread the water out instead of dumping it all in one spot.
