My rain barrel experiment backfired in the best way possible

Back in 2019 I set up a 50 gallon rain barrel off my garage in Portland, figured I'd use it for the garden and save a little on the water bill. First summer it was great, but by fall the spigot clogged with leaves and algae, so I gave up on it. Then this spring I decided to clean it out and got a mesh filter from the hardware store, plus I started adding a quarter cup of vinegar every month. Now I'm actually using it for my tomatoes and they're doing way better than before. Has anyone else had a system that only worked after you stopped overthinking it and just kept it simple?
