Wrong snow shovel angle for 5 winters, neighbor set me straight last week

I always pushed snow straight ahead and then lifted each load to toss it. My driveway runs about 60 feet along Lake Rd in Bay Village, so that was a ton of wasted back effort. Last week my neighbor came out with his shovel and showed me how he slides it sideways the whole time, no lifting at all. I tried it on the next 3 inches of powder and my lower back felt fine for the first time ever. Is there any trick to keeping the snow from rolling back onto the cleared strip when you angle it?
