Tried Joey's on Detroit over by Westlake vs. one of those newer pizza chains on Center Ridge. No contest.

Joey's crust is actually chewy and they don't skimp on the sauce. The other place tasted like cardboard with cheese. Cost me $28 for a large and a salad compared to $22 at the chain. Anyone else notice the old school places around here just hit different?

@avery_fox93 nailed it about the personality thing... makes me wonder though, is it the dough recipe or the oven itself that gives those old spots their edge? I've heard some places still use deck ovens while chains just blast everything through a conveyor belt. Probably explains why one tastes alive and the other tastes like a math problem someone forgot to finish.

Wait, am I the only one who's spent $30 on a pizza that made me feel personally attacked by my wallet? I swear the chain places have figured out how to make dough out of recycled packing material. Joey's might cost more but at least I don't feel like I'm eating a geometry project. That chewy crust you mentioned is exactly what I've been chasing since my grandpa used to take me to the old spots. I'd rather pay extra and taste something that actually has personality than save a few bucks on something that tastes like it was assembled by a robot with no soul.
