Soot vac died at 11pm on a Friday in Cheyenne, do you finish the job or walk away?
Last Friday I was finishing a big job on an old farmhouse outside Cheyenne, Wyoming when my shop vac just quit on me around 11pm. I had about a third of the flue left to brush out and a homeowner who needed the fireplace running by Sunday for a family thing. I ended up finishing the sweep with a hand brush and a plastic tarp, but I know a couple guys who would have packed up and come back Monday. The tarp worked okay but I dumped soot on the hearth rug and had to eat $60 off the bill. Part of me thinks finishing half a job is worse than not starting, because a dirty flue with fresh loose soot can be dangerous. Other sweeps I know say never keep working without proper suction, the dust gets everywhere and you risk your rep. I still can't decide if I did the right thing or if I just got lucky. What would you have done in that spot, finish with hand tools or reschedule?
