Just read that the National Fire Protection Association says 25% of home heating fires are from chimneys

I was looking up some safety stats on the NFPA website and that number really hit me. It's not just a few accidents, it's a full quarter of those fires. Makes you think about how many jobs we're actually preventing. What's the one thing you always check for that you think stops the most problems?

Ever think about how many of those are just from creosote buildup? That stuff is basically fuel waiting for a spark. A good, clean chimney doesn't give the fire anywhere to go.

Haha my neighbor caught me climbing up to clean my chimney last fall and I slipped on the ladder. Now every time I see him he asks if I'm trying to join Santa's crew or just send myself to the ER. I'm pretty sure my creosote buildup qualifies as a second mortgage at this point.

Exactly. Saw a neighbor's chimney fire last winter, and it was just a wall of orange sparks shooting out the top. Scary stuff. They hadn't cleaned it in years.
