A bad batch of mussels from a new supplier nearly shut us down last Friday

We got a delivery from a vendor in Seattle we hadn't used before, and by 2 PM, three separate tables sent back our moules frites saying the shellfish tasted off. I pulled the whole case, about 15 pounds, and sure enough, they had a faint ammonia smell. Had to 86 the dish and apologize to a packed dining room. Has anyone else had a close call with a new seafood source and how do you vet them?

My buddy who runs a little oyster bar had almost the same thing happen with some scallops from a new guy, turned out the truck's cooler had died halfway through the delivery route and they tried to pass them off anyway. Total nightmare, he ended up just sticking with his old fish monger after that.
