Can we talk about how splitting one entree on a date night got weird looks at a diner in Austin?
My girlfriend and I hit up a 24 hour diner on South Congress last month and ordered a single $14 plate of chicken fried steak to share since money was tight before payday. The server made a face and a guy at the counter said loud enough for us to hear that if you can't afford two meals you shouldn't be out at all. So now I'm torn, is sharing a plate a smart cheap date move or does it just look bad, and where do you draw the line?
What did the server actually say when they made that face, or was it just a look? There's a big gap between a tired sigh and a comment. Also, who picked the spot, you or her? If it was her idea and she saw the dirty look, that might've been worse for her than the plate charge. Did the two of you talk about it after, or just let it slide?
