Realized I was petting my cat totally wrong for 4 years until my sister visited
My cat Mochi would always twitch her tail and walk away after I pet her. I thought she just had a short attention span. Then my sister came over last month and started scratching right under Mochi's chin and behind her ears. Mochi started purring so loud I heard it from across the room. Turns out I was basically giving her aggressive back rubs like she was a dog. She was putting up with me the whole time. Has anyone else had that moment where you figure out your cat hated your petting style for years?

Found out my cat was just tolerating my ear scritches for 5 years because I was rubbing against the grain. Now I do it the right way and she still walks off, so honestly I think she just hates me.

Right? That gut punch when you realize you've been doing it wrong the whole time. Five years is a long time to be hated, but honestly cats are weird like that. At least you figured it out, lots of people never do. Maybe she just has a tiny list of approved spots and you finally hit one, or maybe she's just a grump who likes to keep you guessing. Either way, you tried, and that's more than most cats get.
