My vet said cats hide pain until it's almost too late

Took my 8-year-old tabby in for a checkup last Tuesday and turns out she had a cracked tooth - no signs at all, no drooling or avoiding food. How do you even catch stuff like this before it gets bad?

Vets just want to upsell you on expensive dental work.

Ask your vet exactly what the x-rays show and if the cleaning can wait six months. I've found that getting a second opinion from another clinic often helps sort out what's truly urgent from what's optional. Most of the time, a simple dental cleaning every year or two is enough unless there's visible pain or bleeding.
