My neighbor in apartment 3B said her cat only brings her hair ties, never mice, and it made me wonder about their weird gift choices...

She found a stash of 27 hair ties under her couch last week, all placed there by her tabby, which seems like a very specific kind of 'hunt'.

Used to think cats brought mice as some kind of primal flex. Then my friend's cat started hoarding bottle caps in a neat pile by the food bowl. It wasn't about food at all, it was about bringing back the shiny, crinkly things that moved during playtime. Now the hair tie stash makes total sense. They're just bringing the "prey" from their favorite indoor hunt.

What if they're just bad at their job? My old barn cat would leave whole mice by the door, but my house cat brings me a sock. That's not bringing back prey, that's bringing me trash. Maybe some cats are just confused about what hunting is supposed to get you.
