I finally got my cat to stop scratching the couch after one comment from my vet

My cat Luna has been shredding the corner of my beige sofa for like 8 months. I tried sprays, tape, even those soft nail caps but nothing worked. Then during her checkup last month, my vet said cats scratch based on texture and location, not just to be jerks. She told me to put a sisal rope scratcher right next to the couch corner she always hits. It took 3 days but now she uses the rope thing every time instead of the couch. Has anyone else had a cat pick a specific material over another?

Sisal rope beats everything every time.

Oh come on, sisal rope is fine for a scratching post but it falls apart way too fast if the cat actually uses it. Jute rope lasts longer and doesn't shed as many little fibers everywhere. And don't get me started on how sisal smells when it gets wet, it's like a barn in your living room. Plus good luck getting a cat to even look at a sisal rope toy when they have a cardboard scratcher, cardboard wins that fight every single time.
