I always thought my cat hated being held until I saw him jump into a kid's arms

For years, I'd pick him up and he'd squirm, so I figured he just didn't like it. Then I saw my niece sit on the floor and he climbed right into her lap and purred. Was my whole approach to picking him up just too rough or sudden? How do you hold your cat so they feel secure?

Ugh, I feel this so hard. My cat is the same way, I'd grab him and he'd wiggle like crazy. Turns out I was just being a clumsy, awkward holder. It's like they have a whole unspoken manual for being picked up.

Your cat climbed into her lap on his own? That's wild, mine would just stare from across the room. Maybe it's about letting them come to you first, then supporting their back feet so they don't dangle.

Yeah, the back foot support thing @wyatt513 mentioned is key. I found putting a blanket or pillow on my lap first gives them a better landing spot they trust. It makes them way more likely to stick around instead of jumping off right away.
