Had to pick between a laser pointer and a feather wand for my indoor cat's exercise routine

My cat Charlie turned 7 last month and got real chunky, so I tried both toys to see which got him moving more. The laser pointer got him sprinting but he'd get frustrated not catching it, while the feather wand made him jump and pounce but only for 5 minutes tops. Which toy has worked better for keeping your older cat active without stressing them out?

My 9 year old cat Mittens was exactly the same with the laser pointer, he would get so worked up he'd start panting and then just sit there looking betrayed. Have you tried using the laser pointer with a physical target at the end, like shining it onto a toy mouse or a crumpled paper ball so he actually catches something? That way he gets the chase but also the satisfaction of a "kill". I found that made a huge difference for Mittens, he'd go for a solid 10-15 minutes before giving up. What's Charlie's reaction when you try ending the laser session with a tangible toy?
