Critique from a rescue volunteer fixed how I feed my cat

Told me I was free-feeding dry food wrong and my cat was bored out of her mind lol. Switched to puzzle bowls and measured portions after 3 days, now she actually plays with her food instead of scarfing it down. Anyone else have their feeding routine overhauled by a random comment?

Oh man, that reminds me of my friend Sarah. She was just dumping a scoop of kibble into a bowl for her cat every morning and thought it was fine. Then her cat started waking her up at 4am every day yowling and knocking stuff off the nightstand. She took a video and posted it somewhere and someone told her the cat was bored and understimulated from the free feeding. She switched to those little food puzzles that look like a maze and started hiding tiny portions around the house. Cat stopped the 4am rampage and actually started looking excited for mealtime instead of just inhaling everything in two seconds.

Well, I gotta ask - did she just switch to puzzles cold turkey or phase it in? Seems like a cat that used to free feed might get real grumpy if you suddenly make 'em work for every single kibble. My dog would probably just stare at me like I'm crazy and then go knock the puzzle over to spill the food out. How did the cat take to figuring out the maze at first?
