Can we talk about my cat's weird obsession with the corner of the rug

It took me a solid 8 months to figure out she was actually trying to 'hunt' the specific shadow cast by the floor lamp at 3 PM every single day, and now I just move the lamp.

That "solid 8 months" is the most relatable part. We spend all this time trying to decode their little brains, and the answer is usually something completely simple and weird. My cat once spent a week staring at a blank wall, and it turned out he could hear a mouse in the siding. At least your cat's problem had a simple fix, just move the lamp. What's the weirdest thing she's tried to hunt since you figured it out?

Honestly I think we give cats too much credit. Sometimes a lamp is just a lamp and they're just being weird for no reason. My friend's cat got obsessed with a water stain on the ceiling for months, no bugs, no leaks, just a weird spot. We moved her bed, changed her food, everything. Turns out she just liked the shape. Not everything is a secret hunt or super hearing, sometimes they're just little furry weirdos with bad ideas.

Gently correct something here - your friend's cat might have actually been hunting something invisible. I read this thing once about how cats can hear the electrical hum from certain appliances and it sounds like prey to them. That water stain could've been right above a pipe with some tiny vibration she was picking up. My cat spent months staring at a spot on the ceiling that turned out to be right above where the neighbor had a hidden mouse nest in the attic. Not saying it's always a secret mission, but sometimes they're detecting stuff our human ears just can't pick up.
