Appreciation post: My cat finally stopped peeing on my rug and it was my fault the whole time

I spent 8 months thinking my cat was just being spiteful because she kept peeing on the living room rug every Saturday morning. Took her to the vet, spent about $300 on tests, nothing wrong with her. Then my neighbor came over and said 'hey, when did you last change that litter box filter?' and I realized I had been using scented litter that she hated... switched to unscented and she hasn't done it once in 6 weeks. Has anyone else blamed their cat for something that was really a setup issue?

Oh I felt that "blamed my cat" part SO hard. Cats are not spiteful, they're just telling you something is wrong. I had the Same thing happen with my dog and a cheap bed.

Right?! @mary614 my dog chewed up THREE mattresses before I figured out her hip hurt.
