Update: swapped my 40L roller for a 30L backpack for a 9 day trip to Denver, and the wheels were the problem all along
I had two bags in my closet, the old roller and a soft backpack I got for $25 at a garage sale, and I kept picking the roller out of habit. Last trip I finally took the backpack and it was night and day. The roller ate 6 pounds of my weight limit on the frame alone, and I never once used the wheels because airports all have smooth floors anyway. Now I can carry the thing up stairs and on buses without looking like a tourist. Anyone else ditch the wheels and regret it, or was it a one way trip for you too?
My husband made the same switch after a trip to Seattle where he had to haul that roller up three flights of hotel stairs with no elevator. Those spinner wheels seem handy until you hit cobblestones or a curb, then they just rattle around and catch on everything. Once you go backpack it's hard to go back, since you stop planning your whole day around whether the ground is smooth.
