Update: My friend in Seattle swore by packing cubes for years, but I finally tried them last month.

I borrowed a set for a 5-day work trip to Chicago and found they just added bulk and made it harder to see what I had. I ended up unpacking them into the main compartment on day two. Has anyone else ditched the cubes and found a simpler system that works?

Sounds like you used them wrong. Packing cubes compress clothes, they don't add bulk. You probably just had a bad set or overstuffed them.

Right, "What?! You BORROWED them?" Because apparently borrowing packing cubes is the real crime here, not the whole mess she made of your trip. @thomas83, I gotta ask, were these like, heirloom cubes from a fancy brand or something? Did you spill coffee on them? I'm just trying to picture the level of drama that leads to a shocked response like that over some nylon zippered bags. Feels like there's more to this story than just borrowing, because that reaction seems a bit extra for something so simple.
