Tried rolling my clothes instead of folding them for a 2 week trip to Chicago

I always folded everything neat, but last month I rolled all my tees and pants to save space. Ended up with way more wrinkles than I expected and had to steam stuff in the hotel bathroom. Does rolling actually work for most people or is it just one of those travel myths?

The big trick is to roll things tightly and smooth them out as you go, not just ball them up loosely. I've found that heavier fabrics like jeans and sweaters do fine rolled, but lightweight cotton tees and linen are a recipe for wrinkles. What really helps is packing a few of those thin dry cleaning bags and laying them between layers of rolled clothes to cut down on friction. Also, things like button-downs and dress pants are always better off folded with tissue paper inside. You might want to try a hybrid method next time and see if that cuts down on the ironing.

Did you try rolling them really tight and flat or were you just kinda loosely rolling them? I had the same problem with wrinkles my first time rolling, then I figured out you gotta smooth every layer flat as you roll and make it dense like a sleeping bag. Heavier stuff like jeans and hoodies are fine but I still fold my thin cotton tees because they look like garbage if I roll them. Lately I split the difference and roll my pants and sweaters but fold shirts with a piece of tissue inside each one. Saves space without looking like you slept in your suitcase.
