Three years ago my carry-on was a disaster, now it fits everything I need

I used to stuff my bag so full the zipper barely closed and I always had to check it at the gate. Then last spring I watched a guy in Denver fit a week's worth of clothes, shoes, and toiletries into a small backpack. That made me rethink everything. I started rolling my shirts and using packing cubes, and now I can get 5 days of stuff in my 35-liter bag without problems. The main change was learning to layer outfits instead of packing each piece separate. Has anyone else seen a big shift in their own packing after watching someone else do it better?

Did you find that rolling your shirts made a bigger difference than the packing cubes? I tried the cubes first and they helped but it wasn't until I started rolling everything tight like cigars that my bag really came together. The combo of both is definitely the secret sauce I missed for years.

Totally get what you're saying, @dakota479. Rolling tight changed the game for me too way more than cubes alone ever did. It's that combo where everything clicks and suddenly your bag feels twice as big.
