Serious question, did anyone else learn the hard way that a 40L bag is too big for weekend trips?

I flew to Portland for 3 days in April and my 40L backpack got gate checked on both legs because it didn't fit the sizer, so I paid $70 total and waited 25 minutes at the carousel each time. A flight attendant said my bag looked half empty and that's when it hit me, I was packing for "what if" instead of the actual trip. Now I use a 28L and lay everything out two days early, and the sizer has not been a problem since. What size bag do you all grab for a 3 day trip?
