Rant: wasted $35 on a compression cube set that barely fit anything

I bought those fancy Eagle Creek compression cubes before a trip to Portland last month, thinking they'd magically double my space. But after struggling to zip them shut, I ended up with a lumpy mess that took up more room than my normal packing. The cubes added weight and I had to leave behind a sweater I really wanted. Anyone else tried compression cubes and found them totally overhyped?

my friend kate bought a set for a trip to costa rica and same thing happened. she spent an hour trying to get them to zip while sitting on the hotel bed. ended up just tossing them in the dresser and using regular packing cubes the rest of the trip. she said the compressed clothes looked like weird sausage links and the cubes themselves took up all the space anyway. she gave them to goodwill when she got home. total waste of money in her experience.

and that's the thing, it's like the whole "buy a solution to a problem you didn't really have" trap. you see these cubes in every travel blog and you think they'll fix your packing anxiety, but really it's just another plastic thing you gotta manage. same with those overpriced packing organizers for your car trunk that are supposed to keep groceries from sliding around, but then they don't fit your actual bags. it's a lot of marketing magic and not enough just folding stuff sensible and getting on with it. people get so focused on the "system" they forget the basics work fine.
