Packed for 9 days in Rome with a hiking backpack and a dream, now I own 4 cotton tote bags and zero regrets
For years I did the whole rolling method, every t-shirt rolled tight like a little burrito, and I would sit on my suitcase in some hotel in Rome trying to zip it shut while my back screamed at me. Then a friend in Portland showed me her setup: she just uses 4 plain cotton tote bags inside her carry-on, one for tops, one for bottoms, one for undies and socks, one for cords and chargers. I laughed at her, honestly, because it looked too simple. But I gave it a shot for a 9 day trip and I fit everything in a 40 liter bag with room to spare. The totes squish into gaps that packing cubes just can not, and when I get to the hotel I just lift them out and drop them in a drawer. Weird part is I actually use the totes as day bags at the market too, so they earn their keep. Anyone else ditch the fancy cubes for something dumb and cheap like this?
