Everybody swears by packing cubes but I think they are a waste of space

I tried packing cubes for a 10 day trip to Seattle last fall and they just took up room that could have been used for actual clothes. Rolling my shirts tight and stuffing socks in shoes gave me way more space. Has anyone else found cubes to be more trouble than they are worth?

Man I totally get where you're coming from. Packing cubes just end up being another thing to mess with, you know? I've tried them a few times and every time I'm like why did I even bother. So here's my question: did you try the compression cubes or just the regular ones? Because I think that makes a big difference, the compression ones actually squeeze your clothes down a lot. But even with those, I find they only really work if you're doing a trip where you need a few different outfits and want to keep things separate, otherwise rolling is just simpler. What kind of bags were you using for the cubes?

Actually @benbrown, compression cubes aren't really squeezing the air out, they just make your clothes take up less space by packing tighter.
