Walked into a 100 year old house today and saw original wool carpet still going strong

Honestly, I was doing a removal in a Victorian terrace in Manchester and the homeowner pointed out the carpet in the hallway. It was this thick, dark red wool, laid in the 1920s. I had to double take, the wear paths were obvious near the stairs but the pile was still solid in the corners. Made me think about how modern carpets feel like they barely last a decade before they matt down. Do you ever run into old installs that make you wish we still used that quality of stuff? Or is it just the pattern and pile being better back then?

Wool carpet from back then had a dense tight twist that just doesn't quit. Modern stuff feels like they spray glue on jute and call it a day. That old red wool takes decades to flatten while new carpet gets those ugly traffic lanes in two years tops.

Totally feel you on this. It's wild how that old wool carpet just kept going for nearly a century while modern stuff gives up after a few years. I've got a buddy who restores old houses and he's pulled up 1930s carpet that's still totally solid in the low traffic spots, just faded a bit. Makes you wonder why we settled for cheaper materials that wear out so fast. There's something real about seeing that craftsmanship still holding up after all these years, isn't there?
