Power stretcher foot slipped, beware of old hardwood

I was doing a living room in a 1920s house last tuesday and my power stretcher foot kicked out on some worn oak flooring, sending the head right into a baseboard. It cracked the board and left a dent I had to patch, costing me an extra hour. Anyone else double-check their footing on slick or uneven floors before applying pressure?
