Just read that the average carpet installer lifts over 2,000 pounds of material in a single day
I saw it in a trade magazine article about physical strain in our line of work. It made me think about how we never really keep track of that weight while we're just moving rolls and tools around. Do you guys do anything specific to help your back besides just being careful?

Real talk though, that 2,000 pound number sounds dramatic but honestly we're built for way more than that on a daily basis. I've watched dudes haul 300 pound rolls of broadloom up three flights of stairs without breaking a sweat, and they've been doing it for twenty years. The human body adapts fast, especially when you're using proper lifting mechanics and building actual core strength instead of just grunting through it. My uncle installed carpet for 35 years and his back is fine because he stretched properly and didn't treat his body like a rental car. The real danger is people sitting in office chairs all week then trying to lift heavy stuff on weekends, not the actual physical workers who know how to move with their legs.

It's crazy how much hidden work our bodies do. My mail carrier probably lifts a ton of packages without a second thought. Same with a barista moving milk crates all morning. We just get the job done and don't add up the total weight until something hurts. Makes you wonder what other daily tasks have a huge hidden physical cost.
