Watched an old timer in Boise score a stair stringer with a dull pencil and it fixed my layout
I was doing a set of basement stairs in Boise last week and this retired framer walked by my saw horses. He grabbed my pencil, which was worn down to a nub, and said my lines were the problem, not my math. He sharpened it on a scrap of 80 grit and redrew my stringer marks in about 20 seconds. Turns out I was cutting on the fat edge of every line and my treads were creeping 1/16 out of level over the whole run. Anyone else get humbled by a simple tool fix on a job?
A nub of a pencil? That is wild. Twenty seconds and the guy fixed a whole stringer just by sharpening the lead? Meanwhile most of us are out there second guessing our calculators and checking the same numbers three times over. I had no idea a fat pencil line could stack up like that, a 16th at a time, until the whole run is off. The old timers really did earn it the slow way, and it shows.
