Warning: I sanded against the grain on oak for 2 months before my client noticed
I was finishing a set of white oak cabinet doors for a client in Nashville back in March, and I kept running my orbital sander back and forth across the whole panel without thinking about direction. My client's husband walked in one day and ran his hand over a door and asked why it felt rough in spots. I looked closer and saw these little scratch marks going across the grain on like 6 of the 14 doors. I had to redo all of them, which cost me about 12 hours of unpaid work. Now I mark every panel with a pencil arrow before I touch it with a sander. Does anyone here use a scraper instead of sandpaper for the final pass on oak, or am I the only one still fighting this?
