Update: I switched from a regular chalk line to a laser level for layout on a big deck job

Did a 400 square foot deck last month and started with my old chalk box for the joist layout. The lines kept getting blown away by wind or washed off by a quick rain. Switched to a basic DeWalt laser level halfway through and it was a total game changer. No more re-marking lines, and everything stayed perfectly straight. Anyone else made this switch for outdoor work?

Try explaining that to a client paying by the hour.

Chalk lines are basically just suggestions for the wind and rain. My old chalk box was more of a weather vane than a tool. Switching to a laser is like finally getting out of the stone age for outdoor jobs. It's a miracle you only lost half the deck layout before making the change.

My neighbor's deck took three tries with chalk last summer.
